I worked at Baylor Scott & White Health full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Pretty nice coworkers. The benefits are good for a non-profit. Openness to personal issues. All you really need to do is come to work and do your job. Potential for longevity and a bit of every any field within the company if you decide to change job fields.

Cons

No room for advancement in most departments. Someone has to leave and they usually do not promote from within. They are more likely to outsource to contractors or bring in their friends that do not have the job skills. Office politics rules here as within any other large organization. HR is not there to help the employees at all. The pay is not as good as other employers. The raises are based on performance, but they tend set team or group goals so you will not be able to get the best raise. Still not cost of living at any rate.

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Treat them as adults and you would not have such a high turnover. Do not yell at them like they are children. Respect goes a long way. Instead of hiring your friends from outside the company, promote from within and learn how to pay a compliment to those it is due. Employees there for more than a year seem to be treated as work horses and overlooked because they are not brown nosers. It makes them not want to work for someone who would rather have "yes men/women" instead of loyal, hard working employees.

    3.) Implementing a just culture
4.) Utilizing innovative techniques and methodology to achieve quality care (e.g. lean, human factors, data driven healthcare, etc)
5.) Priority on a work / life balance
6.) Large organization with room for both lateral and upward movement
7.) Merger with Scott&White demonstrates a focus on the future
8.) Restructuring the system to be able to thrive in the new model of healthcare

    Cons

1.) Corporate structure (both on the healthcare side and corporate side) are varying, the ability for employees to have a clear path to advancement varies
2.) Buildings, offices, conference rooms, etc are either (1) incredibly nice or (2) in rough shape depending on where you are located
3.) Just culture is a hot topic, and Baylor is achieving movement toward that goal, but isn't there just yet
4.) Like all healthcare systems in today's world, staffing is an issue

    Advice to Management

    1.) Focus on adequate staffing
2.) Remodel conference rooms, offices, and lobbies to at least meet a minimum standard. Some locations are unbelievably beautiful and some are very tacky
3.) Focus more on creating a pathway for successful, visionary employees to move up within the company so they stay at Baylor instead of looking for new opportunities
