I have been working at Beckman Coulter full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Most of the colleagues are courteous and pleasant to work with. The turn around used to be low. I get along with my manager.

Cons

But now, the turn around is high especially since it has been bought by Danaher. We have much less benefits than before. There is a lot of bureaucracy.

Advice to Management

Be less penny pincher. We no longer have expresso coffee because it costs too much...
There is no longer a choice for an HMO health insurance. The PPO is bad.

I have been working at Beckman Coulter full-time

    Pros

Free coffee/ tea/ hot chocolate in the break room. Quarterly company parties at most sites; some sites also have free breakfasts on Fridays. Hours for scientists are 9-5; very rarely is overtime or weekend work required. Many employees have young children and the company is very flexible, allowing you to leave early or to take sick days to take care of sick children.

    Cons

There is no research performed at BCI, almost 100% of the scientists are focused on development. Due to FDA regulations, the development process is very structured with little opportunity for innovation, insight or creativity. PhD- level scientists do come in at a higher level than non-PhDs, however many sites have non-PhDs with outdated skill sets running the projects. Very few layoffs in R&D, resulting in "lifers" who are highly resistant to change and who haven't kept with the the latest technology. Promotions are tenure based with 4+ years required to advance from one job level to the next. HR policy will not allow promotions outside of this guideline unless there is approval from senior management.

Silo mentality and lack of collaboration between marketing and R&D. Marketing managers are very weak and do not understand clinical labs; the majority came from sales positions at other companies and do not have technical backgrounds. BCI is a slower follower of competitors- developing mostly "me too" products years after competitors have launched products on the market. This is because marketing drives the new product planning and the majority of them do not have the ability to make competent decisions in this area.

    Advice to Management

Rethink your promotional policy; promote based on skills and talent and not tenure. The best scientists are leaving and will continue to leave without opportunities to advance and to work on interesting projects. Remove non-technical "sales" marketing managers and replace them with managers who actually know the customer.
