Pros

Most people working there have the best intentions (except for money-driven managers)
It is a good learning organization

Cons

Low Pay for the work
Too many projects handled by too few people. Business chases the money and gets contracting opportunities that then passes onto Engineering to fulfill. This creates a skewed work-life balance where you give up a lot of your life. Since their motives and projects are 'socially beneficial' there is a lot of pressure to deliver.

Advice to Management

Dont chase the money, or try to do it more responsibly. This is tough since the company needs cash, but you are compromising the work and values.

    Pros

    - You know your work impact's people's lives in an incredibly positive way.
    - Smart, charismatic, positive, and open CEO who is genuinely driven to make positive change in our world.
    - Leadership share the same traits and are generally aligned with CEO.
    - Good work life balance.
    - Friendly, positive coworkers, low drama.
    - Leadership strives for transparency and inclusiveness in decision making.
    - Market rate salaries.
    - 20 days of PTO, up to 25 days, a year.
    - Possibility of changing roles between departments.
    - Great location, plenty of food, post office, market, business nearby to run errands.
    - Near CalTrain.
    - Surprisingly, given the company's social mission, personal political affiliation does not come up much at work, which I think it shouldn't while people are on the clock.
    - Very, very strong sense of equality in employment, regardless of age, sex, gender, race, religion, etc.

    Cons

    - Depending on your role, not much room to grow your career vertically.
    - Sometimes management is too lenient and accommodating with staff; good for staff, not good for the organization; some staff do not put in full effort.
    - Administrative work can be slow.
    - Parking: need to get in early to grab a spot in the garage or park a few blocks away.
    - Evening commute is a bit of a pain if driving.
    - Sometimes there is a feeling that you are in a silo, separated from other departments

    Advice to Management

Some team members are taking advantage of management's niceness and are not putting in their best work; you should find a respectful way to address this as it lowers morale for others and is bad for retaining talent.

The draw and strength of the organization is its ability to make incredibly positive change in the world -- please continue to emphasize this to the team and show real world impact and return on investment.

    Do continue to exercise transparency.

Do continue to factor team members' input into the organization roadmap.

I have been working at Benetech as an intern

    Pros

Laid back, people who are there are invested in the mission and promoting social good through technology

    Cons

Lots of older members who are used to seniority equating to power and position. Not very fast turnaround on implementing changes. Not very many new projects.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to change from more junior members.
