I worked at Best Buy part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great employee discount
Terrific co-workers
Flexible hours

Cons

Lack of communication at times.
Not always great leadership
Lack of product

Advice to Management

Try and implement more of what your employees would see on the sales floor. We interact with customers on a daily basis. We know what sales and what doesn't. The stores operate completely differently now as they seem to be more along the lines of Apple Stores. They don't have the same lovable atmosphere that Best Buy used to have.

    Pros

Strong culture, plenty of opportunity to grow your career and move vertically in most markets once career path discovered. Competitive pay and great incentives from employee discount to bonus structure. Above-average work/life balance for a retail company.

    Cons

Retail: Outer-market stores are often disconnected from District staff and therefore the same accountability as major market locations. Retail Management experience can be extremely inconsistent for line-level employees and as a result most line-level employees experience depends specifically on store level supervisors and managers. Many retail line level employees are unaware of career opportunities available in different segments of the enterprise that they might be considered for as Best Buy has an extremely deep talent pool with many college students, graduates, and associates that love the company.

Corporate: Consistent realignments (common among many top companies): Most employees understand that changes are made in interest of the enterprise but it can be disheartening to fear if your role will be considered necessary for the growth of the company.

    Advice to Management

From a retail standpoint please ensure greater checks and balances for in-store management of outer market locations. Unplanned visits to stores to gauge employee experience will be ideal. Be committed to more of the work of discovering your talent pool inside of the retail stores and allow them the opportunity to move where they could impact the companies performance best. On the store level, everything is numbers driven to the point where it may seem short-sighted with managers only looking to appear on top of their business results even though the enterprise has made it clear that our focus is on the growth of our future (which appears very bright). You can't develop anyone if your only focus is on pushing numbers. Develop leaders and the numbers always follow because more people have a stake in the companies' performance.
