Pros

Cons

-Retail Hours
-Over 40 hours/ week
-No Bonuses
-No Commission
-Very small bonuses for Store Managers
-Tight payroll
-Not enough employees
-Many part time employees that are young and there for a little spending money and nothing more

Advice to Management

-Spell Check is your friend
-Better technology is available than what is being used
-Buyers are getting better, but really a handset for a cell phone is going to sit on the shelf...forever

    I worked at Big 5 full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Very flexible scheduling, if not in management. No knowledge or experience necessary for hire. Very affordable and very good health benefits.

    Cons

    No wage or salary negotiation. No employee initiative, creativity, or empowerment. Very little Employee input is not considered when making decisions. Poor quality products. Poor employee discount. Anti technology. Poor training programs for both employees and managers. Very little opportunity for advancement and/or raises and promotions. Little employee and customer trust (bag checks, video review of policy, large bills (over $20) must be checked by manager or very experienced cashier). Out of date grooming standards (only facial hair allowed is mustache) and dress code (tie required). The company believes a shirt and tie give more credibility to the salespeople, but they are not willing to invest time into actually training the employees in customer service and product knowledge, it is very much an after thought.

    Advice to Management

    Even part-time employees have fantastic ideas, be open to those ideas. Let employees make mistakes. Allow employees to have their own style when it comes to selling product. Empower employees to make decisions involving customer experience, not just managers. Auditing every action should really be limited to activities that could result in legal problems (such as firearms sales, not bag and bill checks). High employee turnover, especially of the best candidates, should be an indicator of poor management choices. This was the biggest problem I observed during my time at Big 5. I worked with over 50 members of management, I honestly believe that only 2 of those managers were worthy of their positions.

    I have been working at Big 5 full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Alright Pay, vacation, 401k, believes in hiring from within, benefits, sick and personal time off

    Cons

    work 42.5 hours a week in the winter close to 60. Raises have been missed the past 3 years. You pay a lot for insurance. The company does not care about it's employees.

    Advice to Management

    Be fair to all employees not just the ones in California. California employees get far better benefit packages that they are not allowed to disclose with employees from other states.
