I have been working at Big 5 part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Never got denied a requested day off, coworkers / managers were good people (varies by store). Decent hours and were able to work around my college classes.

Cons

Dress Code - It's the 21'st century, button-up, ties and slacks in a sporting goods environment is ridiculous. No facial hair except for mustaches. This kind of dress code really has no place in any retail store, especially a sporting goods one.
Pay is a bit underwhelming.

Advice to Management

Ditch the dress code, this isn't 1975.

I worked at Big 5 full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Training is okay. Staff is pretty young for the most part. People shopping are usually open to suggestions, because they are shopping at Big 5.

    Cons

Company only hires management from within. Working as a manager trainee is very near slave labor. Unloading a truck with little - or lazy - help is ridiculous. Expecting one person to shelve all those shoes and assist customers on their shift is silly.

    Advice to Management

Hiring people with management experience is done in other companies every day. If you have hired someone with management experience, try treating them with respect. Try hiring people just for unloading those trucks. One person to place the shoes on the shelf on truck day and one person to assist customers would work much more efficiently.
