Pros

Interesting and challenging work. Time off requests almost never denied. Friendly work environment. Ability to advance if you are assertive.

Cons

Must be very assertive to get a salary raise, or advance. Vacation time does not increase with more years of service. No vision coverage.

Advice to Management

Tendency to hire too many engineers/managers without projects to justify the need for the resource. Deadlines for projects often not based in reality. (Ie we have 4 weeks to develop a new device to impress a potential customer).

    Pros

New hires do not require previous experience in the semi-conductor or lab field and may be one of a few opportunities in the Ithaca area to gain experience without a degree. 12 hour rotating schedules may be beneficial to some people.

    Cons

I would strongly recommend you stay away from Macom-Binoptics. In my experience the coworkers were childish, abrasive and purposefully would go out of their way, if they did not like you, to make you feel uncomfortable. The pay was below what is considered a living wage in the area and there are few opportunities for career advancement in the position of lab technician. Management is production orientated, the employee comes last and unfortunately HR sides with this view and is a better representative of management than the employee. Management has a no-references policy and you will start out as a temporary employee.

    Advice to Management

The issues at Macom-Binoptics are systematic and from what I learned long-standing. Management is only interested in production numbers and while the story may be different for scientists, lab technicians are at the bottom of their considerations.
