I have been working at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good work-family balance. Decent place to start your career but then you will bump against the glass ceiling where top management wants no change.

Cons

Top executives have never worked anywhere else and they aren't moving. But man are their salaries increasing even though sales is not. Lacking direction right now.

    Pros

Good working environment, but not technology oriented.

    Cons

    Not competitive salary.
Management does not understand technology, also even if it is for the goodness of Company they try not to do anything so that their job will be safe.

    Advice to Management

Have to put employers interest also in the math.

I worked at Bio-Rad Laboratories full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a more or less stable company than others. Good people to work with. Great benefits package. You get a promotion in 6 months at first, then the next is every 5 years or longer. You get exposure to many aspects of R&D, marketing and regulatory affairs if you are in the right groups and is better used as a launch pad in your career.

    Cons

Feels no longer like a family owned business but is more shareholder oriented since David Schwartz died 3 years ago. They layoff people and projects to make the business grow. Pay is low and promotions are slow (5 years at a time) It is a production based company and has a low emphasis for personal growth. Work-life balance can be skewed. Don't get a laptop. If you do, they will expect more from you. You can easily put in 10-11 hr days and the extra work isn't recognized but then becomes expected. The leadership is stern and confrontational and resistant to new process changes. They are an infantile state of robust design and have no competitive advantage with larger diagnostic companies. You are given a company credit card and you are expected to pay late charges if they don't pay your bill on time even though it isn't your fault. Getting repayment can be a challenge and a huge negative. Get receipts for everything. Management makes you feel bad for taking your personal time off from work from your own account and you must have an explanation to do so, even though policies written encourage you to use your account balance because you have earned it which is highly contradictory between ideals and actions. They lay off 20 year and 39 year seniority personnel right before retirement.

    Advice to Management

You have a high turn over for several reasons and lose your top talent because Bio-Rad HR can be cheap, and management is invasive and disrespectful to people who truly care about the growth of the company. Share what other groups are doing. Less project visibility gives people a sense that management is single sided and secretive. Recognize the amount of time put into the work and worry less about what people produce since projects and priorities change so fast and much it's hard to maintain traction and receive recognition.
