I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Challenging work; smart people; hard working; no slackers!

Cons

Lots of re-orgs; shifting priorities; lots of "hoop jumping" to get easy things done

Advice to Management

Minimize budget oversight and provide more cross career path opportunities --- all road should not lead to having to move to New York

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nothing positive to say at all

    Cons

Highly political organization. You will only receive a promotion if you are liked by seniors. Organization plays favorites. Promotions have nothing to do with performance. Decisions are only made by executives and leaders instill fear in employees. Inexperienced Directors and Managing Directors. New York office is terrible culture. San Francisco culture is much better. A lot of great ideas came from BGI and were implemented at BlackRock. BlackRock never valued diversity and inclusion and committees such as the OUT network and WIN. It never existed or were embraced before BGI merger.

    Advice to Management

Don't make the SF office remote. Get rid of low performers including the highly paid MDs and Directors who lack leadership in the organization. It isn't all about the NY office. A lot of great products (iShares) and engagement ideas came from BGI. Stop buying companies and grow organically.
Save on costs by not flying every MD around the world just for meetings and paying for their corporate housing. T&E spend is more than what an associate or analyst makes in two years
It is 2013. Use video conferencing and web cams!

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Colleagiate, tight knit, merit based (depending what you do). Overall the firm is solid and growing for the long hall. A lot of bright people. Enthusiastic driven CEO with a clear sense of direction.

    Cons

Pay is in line with industry but at lower end.
