"Doing well, but work environment is very bland. Aladdin/Technology side seems out of date."

I have been working at BlackRock as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good pay for an internship.
Growing steadily. The Aladdin side is attracting many new customers.
Good place to just show up, sit for 8 hours and go home.
The teaching seminar about finance held on our first day was outstanding (The rest didn't teach me much)

    Cons

Crowded and noisy offices. You sit shoulder-to-shoulder on a single long desk.
Offices are very conservative looking to fit in with the finance culture.
High turnover rate on the technology side. The programmers that remain are not the passionate ones.
Everything is just hacked together. Hard to learn good programming here.
Full time pay is low for a software developer, especially in NY.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps move the technology guys into a completely separate building or more attractive location. The finance culture is overbearing and prevents the technology side from being creative and energetic.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pretty much every investment style exists somewhere in Blackrock, so lots of opportunity if you know what you want and know how to find it.

    Cons

Company is so big now that management can be out of touch with the specifics of each group, so top-down decision making can feel somewhat incoherent at the ground level.

    Advice to Management

Empower more independence at the investment group level, if you want to be able to compete with external managers unconstrained by large bureaucracy.
