I worked at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are outstanding as are the offices with elaborate aquariums and cool looking conference rooms. There is also free food, but watch for the Bloomberg 15!!

    Cons

Unfortunately when you get into the actual substance of this company an that's your job, there is a lot left to be desired. There is absolutely no career path at this company. They have an internal job board which they have recently promoted and made a big deal of but it does not help if the hiring managers are all on different agendas. It is very difficult for an employee to come to the company and create a PATH because most of the hiring managers are not looking to build and develop skills in employees. They instead want outside experience for intermediate type roles to better build products. They want to take knowledge instead of invest skills back into their own people. What that leaves younger employees with is a career that includes jumps around to numerous entry-level type positions or a career in sales. Those that recognize this are still left stuck as the skills they develop at Bloomberg don't necessarily translate to marketable skills in finance (learning how to input a DRQS is not marketable).

My advice - if you are at all ambitious and want to develop a consistent career path, do not come to this company. Run, don't walk to that other opportunity if you can help it.

    Advice to Management

Encourage managers and departments to work together to build a career path for your employees. Jumping to different entry level roles is NOT a path.

Create an environment where the smart employees can develop a skill-set that is marketable. This will actually encourage them to stay longer, as they are feeling challenged while knowing what they are doing is not actually hurting their chances of getting another job one day. Feel proud that you developed talent instead of afraid they will leave (the smart unchallenged employee will always find a way to leave).

I have been working at Bloomberg L.P. full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great colleagues.
    Great benefits.
    Good compensation.
    Decent work life balance.
    Some software projects are interesting.
Lately they are improving how software projects are run. There has been some relaxing of the unending emphasis on Time-to-Market (i.e. deliver something asap) to actually taking the time to build something cool.

    Cons

Old and proprietary technology. There is no way around this. The terminal is an artifact from the 80s ... with several paint jobs. But hey it works! There are some teams working on cool stuff but they are the exception rather than the norm.
Management is rigid and there is quite some bit of politics.
Not always a meritocracy - more like a favoritocracy. But that is a fact of life everywhere.
Big brother atmosphere - where everything is monitored. Lately this has been improving.

    Advice to Management

The direction over the last couple of years has been positive with the work environment improving. Keep moving in that direction. The market conditions will be a challenge and hence attrition becomes doubly expensive.
