    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - good pay, time-off and wellness programs
    - financially successful company with very good bonus payouts in recent years
    - not-for-profit that is committed to its mission to make health care affordable
    - new senior leadership has strong vision and strategy
    - leaders are committed to positive change, valuing employees and listening
    - friendly colleagues make it easy to meet people and network

    Cons

    - the amount of change and "the unknown" can be unsettling
    - open management positions mean some teams don't have enough direction
    - it's taking time for teams to move away from previous culture (hierarchical, siloed and risk-averse) to new culture (more open dialogue, cross-functional collaboration and ok to make mistakes).

    Advice to Management

    - Keep getting out to meet employees, listen and get to know your front-line
    - Improve and scale the company's technology, e.g. more mobile computing and all-employee forums to interact with senior leaders
    - Focus on retaining key employees during heavy periods of change. Amidst recent reorganizations, Blue Shield has lost not just laid off employees but also employees with critical skills who are hard to replace.

  2. "Good non-profit health plan with attractive pay, talented people, but ironically, expensive benefits"

I worked at Blue Shield Of California full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay at Blue Shield of California is moderately high. If you stay at least 3 years with the company as a full time employee you are eligible for a pension based on age and years of service. This is a rare benefit these days.

    Cons

In my experience, hiring managers tend to favor cadidates with big-3 consulting company history. As a result, there are a lot of smart people, but also a lack of accountability.

For being a health plan, the employees share of the health benefits are pretty expensive.

    Advice to Management

Instill accountability from the top down and honestly take into consideration rank and file thoughts and opinions.
