I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

- Good benefits
- Good work/life balance
- Healthcare is changing and it's an exciting field

Cons

- Bureaucratic
- Siloed
- Slow to get things done
- There is a learned helplessness with many employees so it is hard to be innovative and do exciting things

Advice to Management

Middle management is stuck in their ways. Even though there is a desire to change workplace culture and perceptions, middle management is paying lip service and not making any actual changes.

    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - great people who are smart, friendly and (mostly) collaborative, most are up front so don't really see back-stabbing
    - good benefits including a pension on top of 401K
    - dynamic new leaders coming in
    - some teams allow working from home and this flexibility can be a big help with work/life balance

    Cons

    - not a lot of mentoring, requires your personal initiative
    - culture varies greatly across the state, make sure you get on a good team
    - huge amount of change going on with transition to new CEO, will take some time to settle down
    - slow to adopt technology (hardware, software and social media)

    Advice to Management

    - think more thoroughly about career paths, it seems like there needs to be more options of job families etc
    - one of the value is being agile but it will take training people to be more courageous risk takers
    - upgrade the technology faster, now and ongoing!! why wait to bring in Office 2007 in 2013??
