Current Employee - Teacher in Overland Park, KS

Pros

-Prestigious
-Decent amenities
-Excellent communication
-Building level Administrators
-Competent/caring colleagues
-Community involvement

Cons

-District level Administration
-Poor technology
-Not many opportunities for growth/programs outside of business partners
-Handful of bizarre parents/students
-Poor social-work program
-Lowest pay-scale & "negotiated contract" in metro
-Abuse of power by certain administrators/teachers
-Lack of input/opportunity in materials & resources

Advice to Management

Make this a place teachers are fiscally valued and rewarded. Allow programs that seek to involve students and parents that aren't currently involved. Direct more attention to technology access and training at all buildings. Focus more on meaningful professional development where multiple professionals are involved-not merely one district level specialist. Get rid of early release days (they are a pain for students/staff/parents) and direct attention to more than just test-scores.

    Pros

A teachers schedule will give you a lot of time off, including all major hollidays. The teachers are mostly caring and support each other.

    Cons

Building and district leadership is questionable and too much emphasis is placed on assessment scores. Support is questionable from district and building leaders and the teachers are not supported by their administrators. Image is far too important.

    Advice to Management

Support the teachers, be more visible, eliminate fear of not earning AYP by downplaying the assessments importance, hold all teachers, administrators, parents, and students to the same fair standard (don't play favorites).
