I worked at Boise Technology Inc.

    Pros

The company provides a relaxed research environment, daylight and views of outside, basic benefits, and are not always focused on results.

    Cons

Extremely unbalanced distribution of salary funds allotted by the government, leading to management taking in six figures while qualified BS, MS, and PhD scientists are consistently underpaid and then told there is no money for raises. Management is full of promises and talk of sacrifice being necessary at a startup. Figures are pulled out of thin air to justify salaries far lower than the national or even local... averages. Words are cheap, and small bonuses are given as occasional appeasements. Turnover is very high considering the steep learning curve and mix of chemistry and physics. Two managers, a secretary, and 1-4 scientists comprise the entire company at any one point, always on the brink of shutdown as management milks it for all it's worth. The recession and lowered expectations of salaries that accompanied it were a boon.

    Advice to Management

Pay qualified scientists what they are worth. Listen to employees rather than talking at them in multiple-hour "conversations". High turnover has been occurring since the inception of the company. This doesn't indicate that the company's "poisoned culture" can be attributed solely to the last set of employees to quit, the way you often do. Do not speak ill of all ex-employees to current employees. Do not... address employees as if they were mentally or socially retarded. Workload is always light and employees often have trouble staying busy. Alleviate this somehow. Be more sensitive to the emotions of employees, do not make them cry. Do not shout at employees. Do not force employees to lie to each other. Do not make racist and inappropriate comments during occasional company lunches. Do not engage in psychological or emotional manipulation.

No real benefit to work here unles it's a last resort. Does not act on the safety concerns of employees.
