I worked at Boston Medical Center full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

none. The nurses are bullies and mean-spirited.

Cons

I was promised 3-12 mos training for a specialty I had never worked in. Within 2 weeks on the job, I was told that I had to be independent in 2 weeks in a critical care unit. No support, constant berating & scolding, abusive, punitive and demeaning work environment. Nurses are horrible and mean-spirited towards new staff. Tried as hard as I could, then was fired after 2 months. None of the training as outlined was provided. I was relentlessly pimped by a control-freak chief who constant;y interrupted my work flow with this pimping while I was trying to make a plan for my patients for the day. Ridiculous. Pimping staff??? Disrupting my work flow? Outrageous.

Advice to Management

Make sure you know what your interviewers (Dept Chiefs) are offering new clinical staff -- and that this is being executed as promised.

I worked at Boston Medical Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Free health insurance if you choose BMC Preferred Plan
    -Paid Weekly
    -Lots of vacation time

Vacation time was great, so amazing that when I left this place, I didn't use any of it and got a nice vacation check to my next employer.

    Cons

    -Horrible Work/Life Balance
-Disconnect between employees and managers in ITS
    -Average for Pay
-ITS follows by BU and Doctors guidelines
    -No Shared Responsibility in ITS

I left due to limited growth opportunities, I was unhappy within the dept because of lack of communication and proved myself via my education, work ethic, communication skills. 3 of the same jobs I applied for, a contractor got each over me, a full time permanent employee.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with the people that the people below you manage, you will be surprised.

I worked at Boston Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Wonderful hard working medical staff
    Generally respected employer
Plenty of possibilities for growth (at least on paper)
Academic feel for some BMC positions
There will be a SubWay (sandwiches) soon!

    Cons

Major financial debts may be too much for BMC to handle

Major (long time) senior executives have departed

    Far too many "managers"

Very little Attending (physician) executive leadership and ineffective outside MDs as Vice Presidents

Confusion persists about basic day to day operations - "Surges" result that exhaust staff

    Horrible IT management and systems

Very entrenched Union mentality (especially SEIU) in HR's operations

BMC conflicts with Boston University too common - need to work together

Physical Plant Infrastructure is in poor shape due to excessive square footage of real estate

Turnover high lately and moral not very high overall compared to other local medical centers

    Advice to Management

    Take drastic action now

Shutdown services that other local hospitals can handle. Rebuild when profits allow
IE: outsource the money loosing pharmacy before it takes down BMC and separate the BMCHP so it can make money and get more patients to BMC (but not surges)

Have BU or other professional organization take over IT as soon as possible

City Hospital is dead and NOTHING will bring it back - BU will not help BMC with its debt load - it will just wait and buy the land at auction.

    Fix that debt... fast
