I worked at Box as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

Up-and-coming tech company
Fun startup atmosphere

Cons

Contractors at Box not treated the way contractors should be - a contractor legally should not be held to the same terms that a full-time employee is, i.e., you should be allowed to work from home, set your own hours, etc. Box treats their contractors like any other full-time employee, but deny them the benefits that come with full time employment.
Furthermore, many of the contractors have been at the company for over a year, or multiple years. If someone is skilled enough to do the work of any other regular employee, Box should not be able to keep people as contractors simply because it is a better deal for them.
They also do not pay contractors overtime.

Advice to Management

The way you are using contractors is legally wrong and morally wrong. If someone is skilled enough to do the job of a full-time employee, you should hire them as a full-time employee. It is wrong to deny someone full-time employment because you can get them for a better deal. You are also walking the line of legal wrong-doing here.

I have been working at Box full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fun environment, fast-growing space, potential to disrupt a large market and therefore, potential large business opportunity. Solid board of advisors. If you live in the area or nearby, it is great. For folks in SF or SJ, commute might not be great.

    Cons

Box wants to be another Salesforce.com. It has a very expensive and not too-scalable direct sales model, which sooner or later will weigh them down as a public company. They have hired an unusually large number of VP and above-level individuals, which is also expensive. Too many VP-cooks in the kitchen and politicking slowing down decision-making. Some old-timers (in alliances, sales, product and engineering) stay there because of personal ties, despite their performance and/or behavior being dismal. Some really good folks resigned or were given no other choice but to leave. There have been under the table layoffs and plenty of turnover. Young founders. Diverging views between CEO and COO.

    Advice to Management

You are your very own worst enemy. Get your act together.
