I worked at Boys & Girls Clubs part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

If you truly like working with kids, then you have the flexibility of creating your own programming (with certain limitation) one on one interaction, and ample opportunity to mentor

Cons

If you are not used to this kind of setting, it may be too much. Instructor to youth ratios are high (1 to 30+), discipline styles can be "mom & pop" type of stuff, so locations don't hold parents or students responsible for their actions, staff morale at some sites are low

Advice to Management

Continue to solicit the funds to bring more full-time positions, i.e. education & healthy lifestyles directors, to the local clubs. Typically more qualified candiates needs more work hours in order to give full focus to one job, instead working 2 part-time jobs in order to make a living. Also, it would great to put a cap on instructor to youth ratios.

    Pros

If you are good with children and desire to see them learn and grow this is a great place to work.

    Cons

    The pay could be better.

    Advice to Management

Consider ways to better utilize the skills employees bring to the table.

    Pros

The staff at the Boys and Girls Club are wonderful because everyone there is there for a cause and for a passion, rather than for the money. Everyone is very down-to-earth.

    Cons

You are not paid for any additional time you put in besides your strict hours. As a result, it's hard to lesson plan during the hours given, since children are there during all of those hours. You only get one hour of paid, child-free lesson planning per week.
