I worked at Bristol City Council full-time

Pros

Pay is reasonable, benefits, including work/life balance measures, are excellent. Huge range of different roles across departments, and many roles are internal applicants only. Lot of emphasis on training and promoting from within, so once you work for them, there are ample opportunities to change role and move to higher grade positions. It's hard work, but interesting, although many of the public facing roles are stressful. Worked there for 10 years, and would definitely go back.

Cons

Some departments have rigidly hierarchical management structures which can get in the way. Also a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy, much of which is pointless and time consuming. Some roles (eg admin) have a very flat structure, so there isn't much of a chance of promotion - you have to move into another area to progress up the pay scales.

Advice to Management

You have some very experienced and knowledgeable staff in the lower pay grades - try listening to them!

I worked at Bristol City Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There used to be a great team of people.

    Cons

Management have gutted the heart out of IT, employed contractors who know nothing and who cost more than the permanent staff who are no longer there. What used to be a fantastic team of people all working together to help each other has been gutted into fragments of sad, dispirited, incredibly de-motivated people who no longer care about their jobs.

    Advice to Management

    Souless, incompetent, intellectually lightweight.
