I have been working at British Council full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting work, multicultural and diverse working environment, generally supportive management, some travel opportunities depending on the post, for some posts travel requirements are high, access to interesting and influential people. Good if you are a specialist in a particular geography or discipline.

    Cons

Complicated matrix management can mean that project ownership and accountabilities not always clear. Reduced funding means in some geographies programming decisions are unduly influenced by views of funders and stakeholders rather than core mission and vision. Salaries are low in comparison to expectations and working hours.

    Advice to Management

Improve the development opportunities and career opportunities available to locally- appointed staff. Be realistic in salary offers so you can attract and retain the talent needed.

I have been working at British Council full-time

    Pros

Some Creative employees, flexible work hours (unless you get a LM from hell), opportunity to crash test new skillsets

    Cons

No support from management, management resistant to change, undertrained managers, lack of investment, senior managers waste money on vanity projects, top down management, complacent management, sense of entitlement from senior managers

    Advice to Management

Wake up before it’s too late
