Pros

Employee Education Program. Can take any class for free at Brown. They will pay for your undergrad or grad program at brown. Give you over $5,000 per year to go to another school and attend classes. Free RIPTA bus rides all over RI state. Their commitment to assisting with education training costs, is crystal clear. They help as much as possible. Give employees 6% of salary for retirement. It's evident that people really, really love to work here!

Cons

No matter how you look at it, Brown is a non-profit and salaries tend to be lower (and predetermined) than profit. But, before you accept the position, the salary grade is posted on their website.

Advice to Management

Have only been here 7 months, but so far so good. Ruth J. Simmons, the President, shuts down the University from Christmas Eve to New Years, so employees can spend the holidays with their families.

    Pros

Great benefits package -- the best I have seen anywhere. This is something you may not realize until you have worked a few other places. This includes not just health and dental, but very generous paid time off. The hours are really good as well -- some departments give flex time, allow you to work from home a little bit, etc. In the summer the work week is a little shorter, and even during the academic year the work week is only 37.5 hours. The campus is beautiful, and it is a pleasure to work with many of the professors on interesting projects.

    Cons

Some departments or sub-divisions of departments can be very hide-bound and traditionalist in their approach to things, rather than forward-thinking. Some management personnel definitely don't respect their employees (but others do -- it really depends on the department or sub-division of a given department). Mostly we're talking about IT-related positions. It's also true that as an IT professional you can get paid more in a corporate environment. Another downside to the academic world is that people become very insular and protective of their turf and their ideas, and not prone to trying out new technologies or ideas. Again though, this varies widely from one manager to the next.

    Advice to Management

Look to how your peers do things, and learn from both their mistakes and successes; treat your employees with respect.

I worked at Brown University full-time

    Pros

Friendly environment, wide range of support for self-improvement in all kinds of directions, department staff helpful in both the official grad student role and helping organize tutoring on the side.

    Cons

Possible to fall down the cracks if you don't take the initiative on one of the paths forward Brown provides.
