I worked at BuildASign.com full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

They are able to attract very talented people and I had great co-workers at the non-management level. Very rapid growth, and if you're willing to stay you can move up quickly. Company is committed to supporting local community. Constantly innovating and trying to improve so you can learn a lot quickly.

Cons

There was a lack of transparency with upper management and a pretty serious disconnect with how happy they thought everyone was vs. reality. HIGH turnover rate (one co-worker left after a month), and poor work-life balance. Expect to work overtime. Office culture felt very forced depending on the department - production in particular was generally the least happy group of people.

I worked at BuildASign.com as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic culture centered around innovation, responsibility, and community. Open office concept promotes information sharing. Every day is casual Friday. Coworkers are fun and easy to talk to. Management is very approachable.

    Cons

The signage industry became uninteresting as time went on. Management could have communicated expectations and areas for improvement better, especially at the start of employment.

    Advice to Management

Interact more with employees, share best practices with new arrivals, and recognize their achievements and hard work.

I have been working at BuildASign.com full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * HR takes pretty good care of the employees
    * Production team gets weekly catered lunches (used to be company-wide but was cut from the office group due to lack of interest/attendance)
    * Volunteer Time Off, if you want to volunteer without losing pay, BAS gives you a certain amount of VTO each month
    * Nice break room amenities (unless you're a health food junkie)
    * Fun group of colorful personalities, with (harmless and amusing) personality quirks encouraged
    * Related to above, production has the quirkiest personalities of all.
    * Fun company-wide activities like the Start Up Olympics, the annual talent show, and the annual holiday party
    * Plenty of learning opportunities in some departments
    * Processes are very flexible and subject to change
    * Management is always on the lookout for ways to save money, time, and other resources
    * Ownership very serious about the company's charity work (EX: Philanthropitch). The Giving program is self-funded and dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations across the U.S.
    * Always work to do

    Cons

    * Always work to do (this is not the company to work for if you expect to be able to sit around and play solitaire all day)
    * Low compensation and raises are 'performance-based' (meaning they're rare)
    * New Production Team Members get 10 vacation days a year (they lowered it), more tenured employees get more the longer they are employed here
    * Your PTO tends to accumulate in certain departments because they don't want you taking a vacation since no one else can cover your duties. Fine if you're a work-a-holic.
    * Odd hours for otherwise normal positions (ex: 3am-11am for a customer service position)
    * 12 hour shifts for Production Team Members (and don't expect to be able to sit down)
    * Getting any of the paid company holidays off is rare for production and customer service (but on the upside, they do really like giving you the day off)
    * For new employees: There is an incredibly steep learning curve, especially for customer service and the art department. Expect relatively little mercy if you are a slower learner.
    * Lack of industry-standard printing knowledge overall within the company due to inexperience
    * Little upward mobility throughout company but especially within the art department, production, and customer service, partly because of the low number of positions to be promoted to but also because you moving onward means they have to find someone else to do your highly necessary job instead, and they do not like that at all...
