Pros

Burness employees are passionate and genuinely interested in their content areas. Burness feels like a big family. Management really seems to care about and mentor the staff. The work is meaningful, and you can see the impact you make. Many employees have been with the company for a long time, so they are extremely committed to Burness. Benefits and compensation are great.

Cons

At times the work can be stressful. This is a mission-driven organization and staff are very deep in content, so you really have to go the extra mile to produce the expected high quality deliverables.

    Pros

    Many of the younger people are fun and smart .

    Cons

    Many of the staff, especially the senior staff, pretend to be mission-driven and act like they care about global issues, but they don't really. The company likes to see itself on the same level as a nonprofit, saving the world with communications, but in reality, they are completely disconnected from people in the field who actually make a difference. Furthermore, they actually overcharge their clients, i.e. nonprofits, and the money goes directly to the owner of the company.

    Advice to Management

    Most of the directors are not actually competent; they are only in these positions because they know the owner and have been there for so long.

    I worked at Burness Communications full-time

    Pros

    Mission-driven company that serves primarily non-profit clients (e.g. large foundations, non-profits, etc.) Talented, intelligent, friendly co-workers. This really feels like a big family and it was hard to leave. Clients are usually doing interesting work--Burness has a good enough reputation in certain circles that it can afford to be choosy about clients. Better salary than working at a non-profit, very good benefits, all-in-all good workplace.

    Cons

    Top-heavy in terms of company structure, sometimes slow to adapt to technology. Managers have all been there for a long time, and sometimes there is the classic leadership issue where they can't delegate well. It is possible for entrepreneurial younger employees to carve out a niche for themselves, but a lot of the younger staff gets restless after a while because there's no clear upward trajectory.
