I worked at Burns & Wilcox full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Good place to get your foot in the door of the industry. Little to no experience required.

Cons

Lack of advancement opportunities. Disrespectful senior management. Work/family balance not an option. Expected to work at all times including nights weekends and holidays. Very low pay. They will promise you everything to get you in the door then never deliver. Employees are not respected and only seen as production numbers on a report. Unethical management that encourages cut throat and manipulative behavior.

Advice to Management

Take a look at your senior level executives and the effect they have on employee turnover in their offices.

I worked at Burns & Wilcox full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Structured environment, with national market reach. Very good at "box underwriting" of basic Property and Casualty accounts.

    Cons

No individual ability to think or work productively according to proven standards or experiences. Workplace is so structured that all blinds have to be opened at the same angle and computers facing the same direction. Lunch times are scheduled. Management in the office rates employees on the hours that they work in the office, not taking in to consideration that many self motivated employees work from home on nights and weekends to keep up on workload. The environment is very mistrusting and suspicous. This is encouraged by management. Their motivation is to pit brokers against one another, rather than to positively motivate employees as a group to represent the company. Management regularly talks behind employees backs and gossips. Management regularly berates employees (new and tenured) in an open office setting. Very Unprofessional work environment.

    Advice to Management

Find some leaders that have morals and business ethics to usher your firm in to the 21st century.
