"OK place to build experience, if clear on what you want and position appropriately. Bad place to build a career."

I worked at Business for Social Responsibility full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small, open organization where you can contact anyone directly
Projects provide good platform for building experiences, skills, and exposure
Culture of competitive sharing means you can learn a lot very quickly

    Cons

Poor career development - zero investment in training/mentoring, unclear career paths, opaque promotion process - such that advancement depends a lot on one's own unguided efforts, political skill, and luck
Many projects are PR efforts for client companies with low value and little impact
Senior management and SF headquarters do not listen well to nor value other staff in decision-making
For an organization with social responsibility in its name, BSR treats its own people surprisingly poorly

    Advice to Management

    Value your staff

I worked at Business for Social Responsibility full-time

    Pros

Dedicated, inspiring and passionate colleagues. Excellent benefits. Good work/life balance (for some positions). Opportunity for growth if you are of an entrepreneurial spirit and are a favored employee.

    Cons

BSR is a tyranny pretending to be a democracy. The management team and CEO lead with an iron fist and micromanage most decisions, not always to the benefit of the organization. The arbitrarily selected "in crowd" receive respect and advancement opportunities while most of the organization is overworked, underpaid and generally ignored. Over the past two years, many of the best employees have left after being treated unfairly and poorly. The organization itself is struggling to find its foothold in the new economy and the new, competitive CSR landscape. The organization has become a bureaucracy of the worst imaginable kind.

    Advice to Management

Reassess the talent already in your ranks and stand-up to the biases of your CEO.
