Cons

not the greatest pay, somewhat smaller college so not as much exciting state of the art research, but still great learning environment

I have been working at CAL POLY as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Great learning experience
-Great way to develop skills in mediation, conflict resolution, advertising, event planning, customer service, and administration tasks
-Management is heavily focused on career and personal growth-- lots of opportunities to develop as an individual
-Once you make a connection with your residents, the job becomes very rewarding on a personal level

    Cons

-Work-life balance is what you make of it. Don't think of this as a job where you can 'clock in and clock out'-- your residents will acknowledge you as an Advisor even when you're off-campus, and you'll need to be ready to hop into job mode when someone knocks on your door at 2 AM on a Tuesday.
-Compensation isn't great compared to other schools-- the free room & board is great, but for a job with such strict requirements on when you have to be in the residence halls, it's a shame there's no priority registration.
-My CSD was good about setting clear expectations for expected programs, deadlines, etc., some of the other CSDs were less organized, and frequently dumped time-consuming tasks on their staff at the last second.

    Advice to Management

-Continue offering services for personal development
-Recognize that your Advisors *are* full-time students, and be cognizant of how Advisors are effected by unnecessary programming requirements
