I worked at CDM Smith full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The work environment was friendly all departments were encouraged to work as a team. The salary was very good. You were allowed to work independently and at your own pace.

Cons

The downside to the relaxed work environment was lack of a decent appraisal system. There seemed to be little work recognition and the few promotions were solely given at the managerial level. This was the reason I left. Lack of growth potential.

Advice to Management

Encourage employee retention by focusing on your appraisal system and increasing internal promotions.

I have been working at CDM Smith full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In general everyone is approachable and easy to work with. Most people are willing to help out whenever you have a question. The size of the company allows the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. Good educational programs. Above average benefits. The company is strongly committed to their core values: excellence, initiative, shared commitment, integrity, and teamwork

    Cons

Incompetent IT department. Divided too much geographically, some project managers get upset if others work in their geographical areas without their knowledge. High corporate overhead.

I worked at CDM Smith full-time

    Pros

Large firm with lots of experienced people

    Cons

Culture has changed from engineering excellence to profit motive. Ignores employee contributions unless it is bottom line driven. Abandons smaller clients in favor of new clients with money to spend.

    Advice to Management

Matrix organization is leading to shoddy work which cannot be overcome by adding layers of quality control. Projects have leadership but not ownership. When it comes to loyalty you get back what you give.
