I have been working at CGI full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Paycheck, it is a job. Good people to work with and a decent environment. Upward mobility if you are willing to work 60+ hours a week.

Cons

Benefits are poor, each year more benefits are taken away or reduced. Looks good on the outside, hey you get to purchase Vision Care - go to use it and find out the benefit is very limited. Health benefit reduced every year and is now terrible - pay $$$$ for catastrophic coverage only. Balance of the reward system goes to Management and Shareholders on the back of employees.

Advice to Management

US Division is disconnected from Canada - US managements needs to attract and retain better talent by fighting for better employee compensation. Weed out management that does not contribute TOO MANY Layers! Internal Departments that SHOULD be responsive to employees are terrible. Try and get any issue resolved in 4-6 months with HR, IT - not going to happen! Established a coporate culture - it is about me. Management needs to listen to employees - they haven't for years and employees are stopping trying to help the company.

I have been working at CGI full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you can wear multiple hats both technically and professionally you will fit in with this company. Don't get confortable though, because this company will drop anyone at the drop of a hat if you do not fit into their current plans, fail to meet ambiguous quotas, make too much money, or don't fit into their "culture".

    Cons

Prepare yourself for culture shock and double speak. While the company proudly proclaims it's success is due to the equal balance of interests between the three major stake holders (the share holder, the client, and the employee) the real focus is almost entirely on making money, so the share holder benefits the most, the clients come in a distant second, and the employees are left to sink or swim in the last place in the pecking order.

    Advice to Management

Most new initiatives and project failures at CGI are due to:

    1) over committing to contracts that they are ill equipped to fulfill in the specified time frame
    2) the lay off of their most experienced employees (in favor of low paid help)
    3) lack of sufficient analysis before commiting to a contract
    4) accepting contracts at too low a price
    5) the sales staff not asking for cost analysis or technical input before committing to contracts
    5) the ground work had not been laid for acceptance of such a contract.
    6) insufficient inconsistent staffing
    7) blame is often placed on the lowest level employee when it should travel up the chain
        to the root cause.
    8) low moral at the lowest levels caused by one or more of the above.

CGI treats their low level employees as commodities and scapegoats while in reality they are the glue that holds things together. They get minimal career direction. They have very little choice in choosing the consulting roles they take on. They work long hours. They have little time to expand or refine their careers, but they should place primary focus on this.

CGI must address the above deficiencies and correct them or many clients and employees will suffer the consequences.
