I have been working at CH2M full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Employee ownership culture, still has the culture of a mom and pop firm despite its growth and global presence (aversion to RIFs, collaborative culture where everyone gets a say).

Cons

The downside of the culture and strategy is that there is not the same level of profit to support employee development or other non-billable 'perks'. Compensation and benefits are average by design. As with many firms, employees may feel pressure to find their next project on their own until their network is built in the firm.

Advice to Management

Spend the resources and demand an industry-defining deployment and redeployment platform that gives employees the career opportunities they need to build their future in the company beyond the first 2 year hump.

I worked at CH2M as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company name looks good on resume. Great view out the window.

    Cons

This review concerns working in TAC, the technical support center in Glendale, CO.
    1. This is a highly micromanaged, scripted call center. Every little thing will be timed and measured. Don't take too many bathroom breaks or have a problem - it counts against your numbers.
    2. They typically hire contractors 2-3 times a year, in batches of around a dozen each training class. From what I saw, your odds of not being there in a year are about one in three. They will wash people out of training and let them go for no discernible reason so far as you can tell. Full time CH2M hill employee analysts will also be let go suddenly. There is tremendous turnover and a feeling that management is not leveling with you. You will be nervous.
    3. You will answer hundreds of calls a month, but the QA team will only grade you on 10 randomly chosen calls each month. They will grade you on arbitrary criteria that may have nothing to do with whether you solved the caller's issue. If you have 99 great calls, but they pick the one where you didn't do the greeting script exactly right, you get a zero in that category. Some categories are totally subjective. You may be rated by people as green as you are, too - the QA team is a rotating assignment.
    4. Opportunities to learn specialty technologies and become a subject matter expert - nope. You have to be on the phone constantly.
    5. You are expected to refer to a knowledge base that is often wrong and/or out of date.
    6. Very fake pep talks from management.
    7. You may be told you are doing great repeatedly, and be hearing no issues or complaints with your work, only to wake up to a message that your contract was terminated and don't come in any more. If that happens, and if you were there for a short time and if you left your last job willingly to come to this company, good luck collecting unemployment. To the state, that's a 'disqualifying separation.' Hope you can get a new job right away.
    8. Good luck asking your managers to be references if you are suddenly cut loose. Silence seems to be the norm. This may cause problems in your job hunt.
    9. You will be expected to keep a bamboo plant on your desk. Take good care of it.

    Advice to Management

    Rethink and replace TAC management.

I worked at CH2M as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work place environment and work life balance. Open door policy, easy to get information across the firm. Exciting projects around the world, opportunity to make an impact and leave you brand.

    Cons

Pay base a little below compared to the market, unless you have an unique set of competencies and skills, then you can bargain for a bit more. Unclear performance expectation message, which interferes in your performance evaluation rate, most likely dragging it down.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that the policies have been applied accordingly across the firm, encompassing all levels of employees.
