I worked at CSC as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

Some projects/departments have very well defined processes and procedures and must be followed closely for compliance reasons so there is no question about how things should be done. Provides good structure and sets expectations up front.

Cons

During the economic uncertainty in 2012-2013, they are trying to do a lot more with a lot less thus overtaxing their existing staff, and contractors even more so. Contractors in my department were not treated like a team member but more like an expendable piece of equipment. They push it so hard to the breaking point, squeeze out every last drop of energy, then throw it out and get a new one.

Advice to Management

Treat contractors (and employees) with more respect.
They are there to provide business/technical expertise and they are human.
Make people feel valued and they will want to do good work.

    Pros

federal side has big contracts so your job while boring is stable there. consulting side has some state jobs that are boring but stable. real consulting side is losing share. they pay above market if you are willing to travel.

    Cons

quite a lot of layoffs to start with. there is managment overload and you will not understand what many of them do. many managers are technical sales people with no management skills

    Advice to Management

too many managers that do little that increases bill rates for hands on consultants. hard to compete in today's market if your bill rates too high
