Pros

The Canadian Tourism Commission represents the No. 1 Country Brand in the world. The level of commitment in very high on the team to all levels and there are many satisfactions to work with the Canadian travel industry.

Cons

There are not much possibilities for grouth when you work overseas. Small teams make us work long hours during some seasons.

Advice to Management

It would be great if the Canadian Tourism Commission develops a carrier plan for overseas employees including some time in Head Quarters

I worked at CTC (Canadian Tourism Commission) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Genuine enthusiasm for promoting Canada from many employees
Many excellent dedicated employees at the project level with huge experience and skills
Insight into government budgets and operations
    Insight into cross country-province-city politics
Opportunity to interact with small business owners who create tourism revenue

    Cons

    Favoritism is rampant.
Roles and responsibilities are changed on management whims.
Lack of planning and long-term program vision. Strategy changes every year but remains the same.
    Very top heavy management.
Rotten corporate culture: values are subject to personal interpretation.
    Vendors treated badly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on fostering your teams and projects, rather than obsessing about increasing your influence, using your role as a launchpad to something better and getting your budget to within 1% of total year-end spend so that you get a bonus. It's all taxpayer money after all and the compensation is already great.
