"A nice place to work but no vision at the top"

I have been working at Calfee, Halter & Griswold full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

It is very collegial, and not a place where FaceTime is important. People have lives outside the office and it is not a high pressure atmosphere.

Cons

Salaries have been flat, headcount is shrinking, and there does not seem to be any plan to reverse the decline. The firm seems to lack any vision, while competitors have grown, added offices and seem to be "on the move."

I worked at Calfee, Halter & Griswold full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to work independently and some very good attorneys that are great to work with. Nice mix of clients that lets you work on a variety of subject matter.

    Cons

The pay and bonus are sub-par to be kind. No benefit to billing over the minimum required because raises were paltry even for the highest performers and the top of the bonus scale was ridiculously low also. Some of the practice group leaders couldn't lead a Girl Scout troop.

    Advice to Management

Reward your high performers so that they don't all leave.

I worked at Calfee, Halter & Griswold full-time

    Pros

Opportunities to advance exist if you are willing to manipulate and step on others to worm your way into the elitist, egotistic, misogynistic, good-ole-boys hierarchy.

    Cons

Environment of constant fear of not making hours or living up to expectations, while being given ZERO opportunity to learn or advance. No teamwork exists whatsoever, and main goal instead seems to be that the hierarchy maintain only their own individual hours, positions and egos. Management has created an ugly environment in which employees are pitted against each other rather than invited in and given real growth and team opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Drop your egos and start treating ALL employees equally and with respect. Your current business model will implode if you continue to ignore the needs and desires of those other than executives. Be honest with yourselves and allow your employers to provide honest feedback without fear of being "shut out" of the business.
