    Positive Outlook

I worked at California Office of the Attorney General full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The AG's office gets into a wide range of government and policy areas, and has the potential to make a big impact. When leadership is committed to getting things done, the lawyers in the office can be in the forefront in protecting the public.

    Cons

It's a government agency, so lots of bureaucracy. A lot depends on the personality of the AG. A career-minded politician will be more focused on publicity than actual results, but AGs come and go. Awful salary, good pension and benefits.

    Advice to Management

Make it a place where smart, talented lawyers will want to work.

    Pros

You're likely to get lots of varied experience in litigation. So it's very good if you're at the start of your career and looking to check off boxes (i.e., take depositions, go to trial, argue law and motion, etc.) on your experience list. Some sections have fairly heavy caseloads, so you also get more experience just because you have so many cases to handle. There are lots of good training opportunities, too, on interesting...

    Cons

Very bureaucratic (even compared to some other state agencies): you need supervisor approval for everything, the travel reimbursement process is awful (you will end up fronting a lot of costs for work travel, and it can take a month or more to get reimbursed afterwards--and accounting will give you a hard time if you do anything that is even slightly out of policy, like returning a rental car without filling up the gas...
