Pros

Great company that's made a lot of strong strategic decisions in the last couple of years. There is tremendous direction, communication, and transparency from the executive down to the employees and while it's a complicated place with a lot of moving parts, the leadership teams across the retail banners are very good about keeping us on point and in the loop on where the business is going. Confidence is infectious.

Cons

There are definitely challenges still to be overcoming considering how much Canadian Tire has grown by acquisition in the last few years. Sportchek/FGL, Mark's, Financial Services all seem operate independently in some ways, especially related to IT, and that makes it really hard to navigate and track down who exactly is responsible for what.

Advice to Management

Keep up the ambition and continue working hard to streamline and centralize our operations as a unified corporation under a series of banners.

I have been working at Canadian Tire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent mid-level professionals, expansion of your experience, complex projects (even though there's a big chance you'll never be able to complete or even start these exciting projects).

    Cons

Change is a taboo word or action in this company, any initiative is not supported, integrity is not applicable to too many senior managers (Finance in the first place). Expansion in the corporate world - which executive team is very successful at - is extremely poor in quality of implementation and integration: top level people who pompously launch large projects and systems have no idea how it is actually done "on the floor" - and seem not to care at all. I agree with other reviewers - this top-down awkward structure doesn't work. It's a culture of keeping it low and for senior managers - getting your bonus, period. Their own corporate policies are violated on a massive scale - but if you dare to state it or ask questions, you are out on the street the next day.

    Advice to Management

You exist on a different planet within the same company - it's 21 century, time to re-think your approach to strategic planning. If Henry Mintzberg is any authority in strategic planning for you, drop your helicopter level view: sometimes you have to look not only at the trees in the forest - but under the leaves on the grass.
