Pros

It has proven to be a fun and positive environment to work in. Lots of perks and company events and great benefits.

Cons

Key to success very much seems to be who you know and not what you do for the company. Your reputation among upper management is the single most important element in career growth.

    Pros

    Steady employment in the tough Vancouver market.

    Lots of board games for lunch breaks.

    Cheap Beer.

    Cons

    Studio is heavily mired in ego and politics. There is a common rule of "don't rock the boat". Don't bring up your issues with management on changes in direction. Don't try to implement better team management and work practices. Just keep your head down, talk about your issues outside of the office and do your work.

    Deadlines are consistently ignored, and blame is shifted downwards. Project managers have a hard time with task management. Engine is also very primitive. The tech really needs to be updated to support a AAA title.

    If Vancouver had more competition, this studio would have a hard time keeping their staff. The management in charge of this studio does not have a great amount of experience doing AAA titles, and are making some very odd decisions. Dead Rising 2 missed multiple deadlines for Capcom, resulting in no bonuses for staff (even though it was dangled like a carrot many times).

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees and invest in proper per-production and engine building. Do blind surveys on employee satisfaction.

    I worked at Capcom Vancouver full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Projects are good, the studio today is doing well and there are some bright people and good investments.

    It's one of the few growing studios in Vancouver. Compensation is appropriate for the area.

    Cons

    Feels like an indie studio which grew too fast, lack of experience in driving huge ambitious projects. They seem to have just started on Agile, many of their practices don't scale, milestones are often not respected and projects are often shipping late.

    Technology is a disaster, lack of expertise in managing engineering processes (some examples, no coding standards, no coding reviews, no time allocated to tasks which are not direct game features, builds always broken even in early stages of the projects) led to a huge technical debt (most of the infrastructure clearly shows decisions which made sense on Ps2 but not today), lots of dead code and almost no one seems to clearly know anymore how most things really work.

    Advice to Management

    It feels like some of the senior staff is more concerned about keeping the status quo and participating in political games to hide the real problems than do what's needed to drive the studio into the future.

    Run some internal polls, gather metrics, there is plenty of evidence. Many engineers and artists are miserable, complaining every day about the company in an unhealthy way.
