Pros

Capella Hotels & Resorts provides tremendous insight into the old-world values of Ritz Carlton. The service culture and company mission statement are largely borrowed from the Ritz Carlton company's heyday before the Marriott takeover. The company supports front-line employees on the operations side and empowers them to serve with competitive (keep out the union!) wages and a "customer-comes-first" culture.

Cons

Upper management displays a strange mixture of naivete and arrogance. Sub-par salesperson compensation and micro-management due to inflated expectations = low sales performance and high turnover.

On the sales and marketing side, the company doesn't seem to understand how to build a brand in today's saturated marketplace. Management approaches sales as "service", with the attitude that a place within their ranks should Trump (no reference intended to the highly successful competing hotel brand) any need for competitive wages or a sense of dignity in one's work.

Advice to Management

Take a realistic look at the New York marketplace. Invest in systems, strategies and people to reach your lofty revenue goals. A loose connection to the Ritz Carlton brand is not enough to support rates that compete with the quintessential luxury brand that is Ritz Carton.
