I worked at Capital One part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

- I met some great co workers as my fellow tellers
- When the crisis of Hurricane Sandy came to New York, employees had received extra pay for traveling
- new experiences with customers.. getting to know them and learning alot about them

Cons

- Some managers didn't know how to be managers, very immature.. took management to a whole arrogant level
- I felt like i was in high school with all the "grown adults" who took most of their time to gossip about everyone
- no opportunities
- make you do abundance of work for a little amount of pay
- never had a life always was at work

Advice to Management

Managers need to learn how to show a better example for their employees. They also need to understand not to take things personal and act like a manager or lead teller instead of being immature and ignorant. Also for lead tellers they need not to be micro managers. Human Resources should also listen to employees if they are getting the same complaints over and over about the same manager.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice facilities, good people overall, benefits from day 1, and the vacation time is better than most.

    Cons

Salary is very low considering the amount of work required. Work/life balance is often talked out, but nearly impossible to put into practice. Bonuses and promotions are awarded based on being a favorite of leadership rather than education, experience, or performance. The most vocal get rewarded regardless of actual performance.

    Advice to Management

Leadership should pay more attention to performance and make more of an effort to be fair and unbiased.

I have been working at Capital One full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits - 7.5% match on 401K (on base and bonus), 1K match on FSA, Discounted stock purchase program.
Flexibility, open work space, Wi-Fi at work lets you work from anywhere you want in and around the building.
Really smart intelligent colleagues who make it a great place to work. You are always challenged and motivated for that reason.
The company is always doing the right thing for the employees/associates. (eg: they pay bonuses even when they didn't make much money or had layoffs and doesn't make that an excuse for cutting down on benefits).
With the acquisitions of ING Direct and HSBC Cards, growing even more and unlike most other financial companies is well managed and growing, but very carefully with a bright future ahead.
One of the rare places where I have seen things work the way they are supposed to and if not, you could find a way to work to get that changed.

    Cons

The performance management system is good overall, but the forced ranking system can be painful. Not sure what can be a better option here, but good to think about it.
Lots of type A people which can sometimes be annoying.
Good individual contributors get promoted to people managers which sometimes leads to lack of focus on coaching/mentoring, but rather the people managers just trying to continue to be good individual contributors at their new level.

    Advice to Management

You are doing a great job overall, but please find a way to fix the performance management system.
