I have been working at Cardno full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Plenty of opportunity due to disfunctional structure. If management, specifically at the corporate level, can remove the road blocks there is plenty of opportunity to make something happen at this company. However, there have been no signs of change during my time here.

A significant pro, is that if you wish to stay at a set level with no expectation of advancement it is the perfect place for employment. There are some that fit this, however if you are a motivated individual looking to learn, advance, and really make a career for yourself, THIS IS NOT the place for you unless significant changes are made.

Cons

NO TEAMWORK - Each office and almost each person works individually. Each office is an individual profit/loss center and hence office compete for same clients and work in many instances. Additionally, the "sales" group (National Accounts) are reportedly judged on gross sales NOT profitability. However the offices are judged on profitability. These are in direct conflict. More times than not, proposals are set at a loss. So offices basically cannot meet their profitibility easily without hiding hours written off (i.e. don't bill overages). They reportedly have had only one raise in the past five years. Although this is not a reason that I am a disgruntled employee, it speaks volumes to the way the business is being managed.

Corporate management does not give the authority to the branch managers to do anything about the aforementioned situations. Branch managers often have the same observations I have had, but are powerless to do anything. They appear more interested in keeping the feifdom than growing the business. It is the most combative environment to work in that I have experienced. Very unfortunate.

Advice to Management

Corporate level staff need to thoroughly evaluate their system, obtain feedback from the office level employees (i.e. Branch and Division Managers), and look to make adjustments to reduce the internal road blocks this company has in place.

I have been working at Cardno full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Provides a variety of projects, the ability for self starters to expand existing skill sets, and very little micromanagement of work/products.

    Cons

The shift to a publically traided company has been far from smooth, and upper management is ill equipped to deal with the subtleties of managing staff and stockholders. Technical staff is provided little oversight or administrative support and often succeeds in meeting client needs in spite of management.

    Advice to Management

Upper management seems completely unaware of what goes into providing client services on an office level.

I have been working at Cardno full-time

    Pros

The variety of projects I was involved in was pretty good. Some of my co-workers/bosses were good to work for and learn from.

The flexibility in hours, at least in the office, was really nice.

    Cons

Little chance to grow as a professional.

The lack of supervision from the supervisors, especially when it comes to managing (or not managing) their staff. Favoritism started to become really apparent, especially when it came to eduction. Having a higher degree does not make you a better employee, yet the supervisor just saw the letters behind the name, rather then the ability to do the job appropriately.

Overall, the company was too expensive to bid on small projects and so came across very slow times. This caused a lot of grief when it came to keeping your hours billable.

    Advice to Management

Realize that to grow as a company, you will need to modify your ideas on getting contracts. Maybe set rates per project rather than a blanket set of rates. You might not make a whole lot of money on some projects, but you will get clients and likely keep those clients while building you're reputation.

As a lower man on the totem pole, I felt as though I was treated with disdain for not staying billable. But, that is management's position to bring in work. That's why they are getting paid that big salary. If they can't do it, you need to drop their hours and/or wage.

Make sure your managers are keeping track of what their employees are doing, or not doing. It's offensive to the lower staff to see higher staff spending hours a day playing around on the internet, making personal phone calls, taking (paid) time off to teach classes that are not even remotely related to the job at the company. Very discouraging.
