Pros

Stability and willingness to take on risk. Cargill will give failing businesses a chance to survive. But only for a short time. They will exit businesses where they have no competitive advantage, which is smart.

Cons

The IT outsourcing is not a good decision. IT security support is already difficult for users because of offshoring and communication gaps. Now they are extending this to all IT services. Every biz will suffer.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. But bring IT back to US.

I have been working at Cargill full-time

    Pros

Large scale operations provide interesting challenges. Real commitment to safety, food quality. Good basic benefits. Are trying to bring in new college grads to feed the future leadership roles, are starting to take hold in some plants. Are trying to expand value-added products to improve margins and expand markets. Have capital to invest. Have done some work to implement improvement programs. Company does take long term view some of the time.

    Cons

Old school "boot in the butt" motivational philosophy, especially in Beef BU. In-bred management & supervision, lots of lifers with no other company / industry experience, many with no college education. Weak delegation skills. Commodity products lead to tight finances, low pay, penny wise decisions. Recent droughts have made finances worse, little / no bonuses last few years. Recent improvement programs have mixed results, very spotty leadership commitment. Many/most new college grad hires leave the division or company. Grinding long work hours for many people. Low pay /immigrant workforce has very high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Get serious about positioning for the future - new, more progressive leadership, more advanced technology, better strategic rationalization of products and facilities, ensure leadership commitment to improvement programs or find someone who will. Seriously track & work with new talent - let them know and help them move up, not have them leave in major frustration.

    Pros

uh, the people were awesome, like I said. Everyone seemed friendly and the management seemed like they cared about the employees.

    Cons

the hours were horrible, no personal life

    Advice to Management

consider shortening to a 10 hour day.
