I have been working at Carleton University full-time

Pros

Great benefits and recognition of work-life balance.

Cons

Making changes to curriculum offerings as allied to faculty or shifting department interests occur at a glacial pace. Ottawa is expensive to live in as a single earner and stifling in terms of social life.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Carleton University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Youthful work environment
    - Looks good on the resume
    - Work you can feel good about doing because it's contributing to the education experience of others

    Cons

    - When working as a TA supporting courses taught by contract instructors I was often frustrated because they were thrown into their position with little preparation and there was a lot of confusion
    - When working as a residence fellow I often felt annoyed with the unnecessarily strict and subjectively evaluated programming expectations that didn't jive with the reality of the wants or needs of the students
    - Sometimes the approach of the institution toward students, staff and faculty felt a little too profit-driven for a place of learning -- I felt the quality of the educational experience being provided by the school was sometimes compromised by the amount of students the school wanted to admit into its programs and residence buildings without the proper space, staff or resources to accommodate increased numbers (e.g. new residence buildings were built without new senior residents or onsite counselors being hired or cafeteria space being added)

    Advice to Management

    - Please train and pay your contract instructors more so TAs feel less overwhelmed and more supported

    Pros

World-leading research, friendly and tight-knit faculty, scenic campus, highly competent and helpful admin and HR staff. Science (including computer science and math) and Engineering faculties, with which I had direct contact, are very strong

    Cons

Reliance on government funding and grants can create financial uncertainties and headaches, and entails dealing with bureaucracy on a regular basis

    Advice to Management

Stronger advertising and PR campaigns would help improve Carleton's name recognition. Carleton should be a household name as one of the strongest universities in Canada, but currently is not!
