I worked at Caterpillar full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great people to work with--I still have some of my best friends to this day even 4 years after leaving CAT. Good salary and nice benefits.

Cons

CAT is a classic slow-moving, tons of red tape, large corporation that you read about in business books. While they do a lot to protect its products, brand, and reputation, sometimes the only thing holding CAT back is CAT itself.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - International exposure
    - Can find almost any type of job within the company
    - Excellent work - life balance, flexible hours
    - Low stress jobs, most people are from rural / agricultural background and very laid back

    Cons

    - All roads lead to Peoria
    - Slackers are rewarded almost exactly same as high performing employees.
    - Higher education not supported (Tuition assistance program is a joke)
    - Pay is about 20% less than comparable jobs in top companies

    Advice to Management

There's a growing sense within the ranks that the executive office is driven by one metric and one metric alone ... Profit Per Share. Entire business units are put on temporary layoffs just to meet this target. This attitude will have grave impact on attrition rates and employee morale / productivity since the demographic of Caterpillar is changing from rural farmboys to a much more diverse and smart urban workforce.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, even though they are expensive, still nice to have.

    Cons

They are strictly a numbers company. They will preach Values, morality, safety, people, and quality, but in the end they only care about profit. Never been so disappointed in what a company has become as this one. After working there 8 years i was removed from my job, for pointing out how much people were being asked to due, while on a slowdown. Would never advise anyone serious about a careet to join this company

    Advice to Management

Learn to follow those values you preach so much about. Treat your workers as real people.
