I worked at Cengage full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Cengage's Mason office offers great benefits, a pleasant work environment and professional colleagues.

Cons

The GPMS division is looked down upon by other divisions, which makes interdepartmental mobility difficult. Despite receiving excellent annual reviews while working in Cengage's production group, despite earning an MBA, and despite having nearly 10 years of editorial experience prior to working at Cengage, I could not get hired into their editorial group.

Advice to Management

Within GPMS, communication is often lacking between managers and direct reports.

    Philosophical difference in corporate direction due to budget constraints.

    Budget decisions should occur in a more timely manner to enable proper execution of Planning and Execution initiatives.

    Pros

    The Digital education age is upon us and it is a great time to get on board. Benefits are good.

    Cons

    The material given to assist end-users is often out-dated. Mangers Micro-Manage. Compensation is not so good.

    Advice to Management

    Stop Micromanaging, and own up to the fact you have antiquated data out there for your employees to use. Fix it, and you will be on your way to fixing your employees. Your employees are using the outdated tools you give them, so don't blame them when they give out outdated information. Training could be better. No feedback form was offered. Managers, when you criticize, exercise "constructive criticism". If you blast out all this negativity with not once ounce of positivity, the end result will be worn out employees- worn out physically, and mentally. Also, pay better! You get what you pay for. It would be nice if pay was based on education and experience. Say that you value your employees contributions- and mean it. Listen to the employees, and if something is not right,don't try to be defensive and say "it's always been like that". Fix it. And if you aren't empowered, find someone who is.
