Pros

Good work/life balance. Products that have the potential to really make a difference in the world. Recognizes that the old business model needs to change. Lots of people who really care about the company and the mission.

Cons

Too much bureaucracy. Many long-term employees seem satisfied with the status quo. Recognition of the need to change the business model often doesn't extend to feeling the need to change the supporting business practices or how the work gets done.

Advice to Management

Recognize that your previous formula for success can't just be rubber stamped. Better communication. Show you care about the people through actions, not just words. Change the whole business as soon as you can after the product direction is heading the right way.

    Pros

    Good benefits, good hours, great staff and staff work ethic.

    Cons

    Management is too separated from the day-to-day, but insists on planning half-baked workflows for immediate implementation. Also, management at the Executive Director level and above doesn't value experience or veteran insight.

    Advice to Management

    Ask your own people for their insights, and listen to their responses.

    I worked at Cengage full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good pay, good benefits...at least before the bankruptcy.

    Cons

    The operation is being run by mangers with few years experience as managers and no experience running operations in some markets.

    Some of the Sales Directors take great pride in "managing- up" to their bosses instead of finding ways to win new business for people in the field. Constant lay-offs over the last year has stripped the company of most people who were successful and knew how to get things done.

    No real technology product development and the product that they do have is not ready for wide distribution.

    Advice to Management

    With their style of management ...they wouldn't take it anyway.
