Pros

It is a great experience, and the work you get to do there is truly rewarding. I'm extremely proud of my work and time there, and am sad I could not have continued at CSIS with pay.

Cons

I felt when i was there depending on what project you were associated with, there was a varied amount of workload and expectations. There also are not very many positions for jobs.

Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing

    Pros

At CSIS, you are always dealing with very interesting and important issues. It is definitely nice getting paid to take an objective look at some of our nation's most important problems.

    Cons

This is not a long-term career. Unless you have a Ph.D. and are a leader in your field, you will never be a scholar. Basically, you will never advance beyond an assistant position in which a significant portion of your time is filled with administrative work.

    Advice to Management

Research associates should receive more competitive pay. Also, the organization should better utilize associates' expertise, which is often pretty considerable.

    Pros

There is ample opportunity for studying/writing material pertinent to your field.
You have the ability to network in your desired career field.

    Cons

There is always room for lateral movement within CSIS but not vertical movement easily.
Hierarchy plays a big role within the organization.

    Advice to Management

Have a structured system for career advancement across the board.
Create a cross-pollination scheme to enlarge knowledge base.
Know your personnel and what their strengths/weaknesses are.
