Pros

The CDC is the ideal place for those public health professionals who desire to work on combating the major issues of of health from the national stage.

Cons

It can feel some what disconnected from community and local level issues (not the most ideal place if you are more interested in community level intervention and interaction).

I have been working at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great networking opportunity. You get to work with world renowned scientists. Interesting lectures, seminars, and conferences.

    Cons

Dry, stressful, unfriendly environment. Senior scientists lack interpersonal and communicacion skills to *manage* others. FTEs work mostly from home, so it's contractors' responsibility to get things done. Whether you become an FTE depends exclusively on politics, not on your hard-work and accomplishments. Management will not stand up for those who are expendable, even in situations where a supervisor clearly cross the line.

    Advice to Management

Having incompetent and abrasive scientists as supervisors results in decreased productivity and discourages young, talented professionals from pursuing a career at the CDC. Hiring practices need to be revised to keep those who do the work and fire those who don't even show up to work.
