I have been working at Cheddar (NY) full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

-- In a struggling media landscape Cheddar is growing rapidly. -- There is no fat in the company, your job and work matter. -- Everyone has access to senior management. -- It's possible to move around in the company if you find a better fit. -- The culture is transparent and direct. Weekly all-hands and 1:1s are mandatory.

    Cons

Things move fast and can change quickly which is not for everyone.

Many thanks. On the cons, things do change, but I think we have done a good job of not course correcting the boat too rapidly, and giving each decision or initiative we try a shot of numerous months.

    Pros

This is a place to work if you want to feel like you actually have a hand in building a company and making an impact, at any level. Teams are really lean so you have to work hard and wear many hats, but there are a lot of pros to that when you look at the glass half full. You get to take on responsibility and ownership that you would never have the opportunity to at a larger org and you have an incredible opportunity...

    Cons

Teams are small and the pace is FAST, that is not for everyone. There have been some issues with some management, but it seems as though the CEO and President are aware and actively working to fix. Managers now have training, and an engagement surgery is being rolled out to employees for feedback. The company seems to be going through the normal growing pains of a startup, but they are proactively working to get ahead...

I have been working at Cheddar (NY) full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Cheddar is the epitome of an early-stage media startup with all the upsides and downsides that brings. The organization is incredibly flat, which means there are few layers between you and upper management. You can be a mid-level staffer her and spin up an entire editorial or partnership initiative and get the backing of the CEO, which is not going to happen at a place like CNN. You will rarely if ever be told a flat-out...

    Cons

Internal communication is still very much on a need-to-know basis, and often even when you actually do NEED to know something you find out too late. The CEO does do a good job of trying to keep everyone updated on companywide initiatives during weekly all-hands, but managers are usually very bad at keeping everyone on the same page about department strategy/coming initiatives. The company has never had a comms person...

    Advice to Management

Instill in managers that their ability to delegate to their direct reports is not only a good thing, but critical in how they are evaluated as managers. We need 360 performance reviews badly. We are too small of a company for fiefdoms of control to already be built like they are currently. Create a culture where all "process" is constantly being questioned through the lens of: Can this be more efficient? Lots of things...
