"Summer Internship"

I have been working at Children's Defense Fund as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Great opportunity to contribute to good causes in various capacities- there is never a sense of doing "busy work" at CDF. I also had the chance to work across departments and help other staff members aside from my supervisor so there was a lot of exposure to the different job functions.

Cons

It can be a little harried and disorganized, but that's just the nature of nonprofit.

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

The Freedom School is an excellent resource in giving children great learning opportunities and self-esteem.

    Cons

Despite the good name, the Children's Defense Fund is a poorly run organization that does not offer the professional experience one would expect. There's irony in advocating for children while having the children of employees live in borderline poverty. Cutthroat and dishonest. Catty and functions on the system of personal favoritism. Senior leadership bullies, yells, insults and overall attempts to intimidate subordinates. Tries to dictate employee interaction with peers, STRONGLY (and inappropriately) suggesting friendships and other personal relationships.

    Advice to Management

Learn to treat employees with honesty and respect. Lead with integrity.

    Pros

Fantastic atmosphere and staff support. As an intern, this was a great opportunity to develop project management skills, lobbying experience, and networking opportunities.

    Cons

Working in Texas the office space was small and staff was limited.
