I have been working at Church World Service full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

There is an opportunity to impact the lives of people who have experienced devastation, i.e. Sandy, escaping from a global setting.

Cons

Unnecessarily hierarchical; under-resourced; disorganized.. managers are distant.

Advice to Management

Communicate positively to staff. Connect one department to the others better.

    Pros

It's good, honest work, and one definitely feels a sense of fulfillment while working here. The staff is dedicated to the humanitarian cause, and the clients are usually quite appreciative.

    Cons

Because of how understaffed the company is, the caseworkers really push as hard as they can to get people to help out. This isn't a job for those who can easily be pushed around. I was just an interpreter, but after about two sessions, I was asked to do more things, essentially becoming an unofficial caseworker quite quickly, using my own car and gas to pick up clients, take them to appointments where caseworkers didn't show up, wrote up reports and summaries for what I did and sent it back to the office. I felt bad for the staff and attempted to help, but I ended up abused.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people! I know that the budget is tight, but perhaps the organization then needs to downsize.
