I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Pay OK, benefits good. Pockets of highly qualified and ethical people.

Cons

The latest craze is to centralize everything, officially to promote quicker execution on the turnaround but everyone knows it's to save cost. As a result you now have concentrations of power emerging with little room for diversity of ideas.

Advice to Management

In the next layoff, aim your cuts a little higher up the food chain and you may see some positive results. And tell the ones left that they actually have to deliver something not just cut cost.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Incredible top corporate leadership (Chambers, Pond, few other in exec suite)
    Compensation for sales role
Best benefits (Insurance, etc) in industry

    Cons

Grueling weekly, monthly, quarterly forecast process and methodology
    Work / life balance
    Difficult advancement

    Advice to Management

To Mr Chambers: Keep doing what you're doing, stay strong
To field leadership: ensure you have the right regional and operation-level directors in place and don't be afraid or meek in making changes as warranted. Keep perspective of the "little guy" who is the driver of Cisco revenue and has a finger on the pulse of reality

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Dynamic, fast-paced work environment. Extremely bright and intelligent colleagues and peers.
Innovation highly encouraged and supported from the top down.

    Cons

Has had a number of cut backs over the past few years. Overall workload has increased across the board. Can be an extremely trying commute if you do not live in the immediate area.
