I worked at Cisco Systems as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Solid company.
Great marketshare.
Industry leader.
Cool technology.

Cons

Huge.
Corporate.
Middle Management all over the place.
Can easily get pigeon holed.

My internship was 10 weeks long. I think I could have done my entire project in 2 days. The corporate hoops and ladders I had to jump through made it super difficult to get work done. I like getting stuff done and this is not the place for that (well for an internship at least).

Advice to Management

The people under you are smarter than you think.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very flexible work arrangements: telecommuting and working from home occasionally are all okay
    Good salary, relatively speaking
Some super smart people, but not necessarily deployed well

    Cons

Facilities are overly frugal: no sense that employees working hard are valued
    Culture of internal competition
    Ruthlessness

    Advice to Management

Stop playing people/teams/groups off of each other
If you're going to do layoffs, have a plan in place as to who's going to pick up the slack for those who got cut.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The medical benefits are good and the peers are friendly. Working remotely was encouraged. Cisco is particularly good location for those who are self training and able to see and volunteer for work that needs to be done.

    Cons

Your advancement may be linked to how popular your manager is with upper management. Also, if you are one who needs solid direction, you may not be able to get it. In addition, training budgets were quite frugal. Regarding stock options, they really have not performed well since the 90s.
